Washington NFL Team Has set its temporary name to ‘Washington football team’

After much debate over the last few years, The Washington Redskins have decided to change their name. They will go as the ‘Washington Football Team’ for the entirety of the 2020 NFL season. The season is approaching very soon and being forced to swiftly change their name, this will be a temporary name for the season as they look to rebrand themselves after the season. There has been much backlash over the teams new name as many people think it’s a lazy choice. Here is what new executive vice president and chief marketing officer Terry Bateman had to say on the matter:
“You’re doing a process that correctly takes 12 to 18 months. If you want to do it right, you have to take a deep breath, take a step back and go through the process,” he said. “We want to do it right, we want something thoughtful and inclusive and smart and bring a lot of points of views into this and come out the other side with something everyone is proud of and can rally behind.
“It feels organic and natural to do this. I love the look of what we’ve done. It’s really strong. I like the logo and the uniforms and the colors. … There’s a tremendous amount of work to do for the next 50 days to do all this. It’s a tremendous amount of work to go through this. The new will go up and the old will go down.”
The sudden change comes after FedEx threatened to take away their sponsorship from the stadium and funding for the team, the team name is also considered by many to be a derogatory name that is harmful to Native Americans. The Washington football team now looks toward the 2020 NFL season and beyond with a new name.
